Ferdinand Ready To Battle Youngsters For Man Utd Place
Ferdinand is the oldest of United's first-team defenders at 34 years old ,with Nemanja Vidic the other experienced player and Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones all pressing for places at the heart of the Red Devils' defence. .
However, Ferdinand established himself as the first choice last season, making 34 appearances and being voted a member of the PFA Team of the Year.
While Ferdinand expects a challenge to stay in the side, he is determined not to make way.
"It was the same last season," he told ESPN. "There is a great history and it is part of the club with young players coming through and establishing themselves and I am all for that, but I want to play games.
"I want to play for Man United and the young lads are going to have to fight to get in the team just like I did when I was a kid.
"Now it is roles reversed but it is obvious if you want to win things you have to have rivalry within the squad and it is done the right way here - whoever gets the shirt is supported by everyone."
The former England captain made 34 appearance last season for the Premier League champions scoring his only goal against Swansea in Sir Alex Ferguson's last game at Old Trafford.
